When the industry big boys, ATN, announced they would be adding on to their revolutionary range of BinoX thermal binoculars, nobody imagined they would show up at the Shot Show with six different models.
We thought we’d take a look at the entire 4T range and clarify whether ATN jumped the gun by releasing so many new models or if these products hit the mark collectively.
But before we dive into our discussion around ATN’s latest range, let’s take a quick look at why thermal binoculars are such an important piece of gear to the modern-day hunter.
Binoculars have accompanied hunters on their trips for decades. What used to be a simple tool that had one duty is now a specialized high-tech piece of equipment that serves multiple secondary purposes.
Thermal binoculars are used by the modern-day hunter to help with:
How these devices work is a true testament to the marvel of modern-day science. To be as non-technical as possible, thermal binoculars work by detecting the heat signature of the target and displaying that signature as an image for us to see.
Thermal binoculars are the most efficient and effective thermal imaging tools. However, it is important to note that some hunters will opt for a thermal monocular over a pair of binoculars due to their smaller size and lower cost. But today, with technological advancements occurring by the day, thermal binoculars are becoming more compact, cheaper, and more popular once again.
One prime example of a compact pair of thermal binoculars is the topic of today’s post: the BinoX 4T series.
The BinoX 4T Smart Thermal Binoculars are proudly brought to you by ATN. Back in 2015, ATN presented its BinoX HD binoculars which impressed everyone with its capability to switch between daytime and nighttime mode quickly and easily. At 2019’s Shot Show which took place in January at the Las Vegas Sands Expo and Convention Center, ATN showcased their latest addition to the BinoX HD binoculars family, the 4T Series.
The series consists of two product lines: the 384 models and the 640 models. Each line consists of three products. This entire line of products is a blend of practicality and functionality, with an impressive list of high-tech features by anyone’s standards.
All of the 4T products boast the following features:
On top of the features we mentioned all of the 4T products share the following characteristics:
In terms of design, it’s evident that the ATN guys put thought into the look, feel and overall design of their BinoX 4T series. A matte black and gray finish coats the hard-plastic body so it’s surprisingly stylish for a piece of hunting gear.
The bonus is the accessories. Included with every purchase of a BinoX 4T product are a USB-C cable, soft carrying case, neck strap, lens cover, and cleaning cloth.
The 384 line consists of three optics with different magnification specs: the 1.25-5X, the 2-8X and the 4.5-18X. The 384 model line all have a thermal resolution of 384x288.
The ATN BinoX 4T 384 1.25-5x has a detection range of 750 yards, a recognition range of 335 yards and an identification range of 205 yards. A field of view of 16°x12.5° is found in this model.
On the other hand, the ATN BinoX 4T 384 2-8x has a detection range of 960 yards, a recognition range of 480 yards and an identification range of 300 yards. This model’s field of view is 12°x9.5°.
Finally, the ATN BinoX 4T 384 4.5-18x has a detection range of 1800 yards a recognition range of 720 yards, an identification range of 430 yards and a field of view of 6°x4.7°.
You can shop according to your needs and type of activities.
The 640 line also consists of three optics with different magnification specs: the 1-10X, the 1.5-15X and the 2.5-25X. The 640 model line has a thermal resolution of 640x480.
The ATN BinoX 4T640 1-10x has a detection range of 830 yards, a recognition range of 350 yards, and an identification range of 225 yards. This model has a field of view of 32°x25°.
With the ATN BinoX 4T 1.5-15x, you can expect a detection range of 1050 yards, a recognition range of 530 yards, an identification range of 330 yards and a field of view of 24°x19°.
Last, but definitely not least, is the ATN BinoX 4T 640 2.5-25x with its 1950 yard detection range, recognition range of 800 yards and an identification range of 475 yards. A field of view of 12.5°x9.7° is found in this model.
Gen 4 is the latest technology that has been cleverly incorporated into the sensors found in the BinoX 4T binoculars. This Gen 4 sensor is also one of the key differences between the 384 and the 640 products. The BinoX 4T 384 products boast a thermal sensor of 384x288, while the BinoX 4T 640 products have a thermal sensor of 640x480.
The Laser Rangefinder that ATN integrated into the BinoX 4T means they can be used in daytime and nighttime & provide you with the ability to range your target no matter what. Use the Laser Rangefinder to determine the distance from your target as well as to increase the accuracy of your ranging.
The binoculars found in the 4T line all boast built-in IR illuminators. This isn’t always found in night vision devices so you can help members of your hunting party who use NVDs to see better.
Ballistic Information Exchange (BIX) is the technology that has got everyone talking. ATN’s Smart HD devices use BIX to aid in the communication and exchange of information between devices. On top of being simple to pair and easy to use, this technology is independent and relies on no apps or additional equipment to work.
If you aren’t planning on upgrading to one of ATN’s Smart HD devices, you can still take advantage of the awesome BIX tech through the Laser Ballistics app.
All of ATN’s Smart HD optic products are able to record videos and take photos, saving the files directly to the micro SD card included. The Obsidian IV Dual Core allows you to simultaneously record 1280x960 @ 60 fps videos to the SD card while streaming HD video via Wi-Fi so the friends and family who couldn’t join you on your hunt can at least watch you.
The BinoX 4T’s boast an internal lithium-ion battery that lasts up to 16 hours on a single charge, so a pair of these will be perfect for those long hunting trips. The battery will take 6 hours to fully charge from 0% to 100%. Charging is done via the included USB-C cable, the port for which is found on the right side of the device just underneath the rubber cap.
Using binoculars from the BinoX 4T line couldn’t be easier thanks to a clever, yet simple, design and an expert level of attention to detail. Adorning the body of the models are buttons for power, up, down, left, right, ok and a ring for diopter adjustment.
On the home screen you will note the following:
These devices are all about control. You can choose from five different levels of screen brightness, whether you’d prefer a Standard or Metric system for the date and time & which widgets you’d like on your home screen. On top of this, you can choose if you want to activate color mode or black hot/white hot mode. Customization is always welcome as a hunter is then able to set up equipment to ensure a streamlined hunting session, according to his or her preferences.
ATN has taken special care to make sure that their thermal binoculars are as comfortable to use as traditional binoculars are. The range of interpupillary adjustment is 60 to 70 mm while the eye relief of the binoculars is 10 to 30 mm. This means that the binoculars will fit everyone comfortably and can be easily adjusted to suit your preferences.
When compared to traditional binoculars the BinoX 4T is compact and easy to carry. With dimensions of 9.4 x 5 x 2.6 inches, you’ll be able to fit them in with your other supplies without it taking up too much space. Weighing in at 2.5 lb, these binoculars are heavier than a monocular would be but won’t weigh you down significantly.
The BinoX 4T range is weather-resistant so you can use these binoculars in all conditions, including rain, snows, and fog. The days of a little rain, sleet or mist stopping you from hunting are over thanks to the 4T’s official IP rating of weather-resistant.
What makes this product even more attractive is that its manufacturers firmly stand behind its quality and craftsmanship. All products in the BinoX 4T line are covered by ATN’s 3-year warranty that takes effect from the date of purchase.
Such a long warranty in itself is proof of the quality of the product you’re buying.
So, the real question we need to ask is this: did ATN produce a series that lives up to the company’s industry-dominating reputation?
The answer to this question is a resounding yes.
Its weather resistance, Gen 4 sensor, and Laser Rangefinder capabilities are appealing as is its simple operation & user-friendliness. But what really speaks to us is its innovative BIX technology, which we feel will really help you improve your hunting game.
ATN has really catered to a wide market with these binoculars and it’s clear that their users were kept in mind throughout the design process. While neither product line within the 4T range is particularly cheap, if you’re a serious hunter or a newbie who wants to get kitted out properly, then this is a worthwhile investment. We love that the devices fall into different price ranges so they can accommodate different budgets.
In our opinion, the products of the ATN BinoX 4T range are worth setting your sights on.
We can’t wait to see what ATN comes up with next.
